Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a pair of porcelain flower vases, hanatate, for Buddhist altars. These vases are very simple with a smooth white glaze. They have small handles on either side with a criss-cross pattern.
It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The meaning of offering sakaki tree leaves is that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul.
