Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside is white with a floral plum and cherry blossom pattern while the front is red with large chrysanthemum designs in gold with paulownia leaves and blossoms.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

- Good condition considering its age. Fold marks on the top corners and top edge. Discoloration of white sections. Stains on white back side. Center of chrysanthemums may be sun-faded from a bright teal (see bottom corner). Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
