This is an antique Japanese ceramic soy sauce bottle. This style of tough, portable bottle is called kayoi. The commuting sake bottle became popular as a rental container for liquor, vinegars, soy sauce, etc in the Edo period. This period bottle is gray with brown specks and some black Japanese kanji characters on the outside.
