Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a rectangular vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a large chrysanthemum and paulownia flower pattern, while the front side is a teal (bottom portion is faded) with embroidered lotus flowers and leaves in pink and purple. It also features a subtle flowing water design in gold and light blue that creates a lotus pond scene. This type is often used as a background for a standard triangular uchishiki.

Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

• Okay condition considering its age. Fold creases. Bottom portion of teal front side is heavily faded. Some light brown stains on white sections. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
