Antique Japanese Metal Surgical Tool
This is an antique Japanese steel metal tonsil guillotine (tosillotome) once likely used in a surgical suite. The loop on one end is for securing the tonsil, while the small, movable hook-like blade/skewer is for keeping the tonsil in place during extraction. The bottom loop is pulled backward, which reveals a round blade that is meant to slice through tissue. The slidable blade piece on the top is removable. This tool was a popular method of removing tonsils through the early 1900s, but has since been replaced with safer instruments that greatly minimize complications.
