Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This antique Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents a bird, possibly a hawk, sitting on a tree, likely a muku tree. A vine with red leaves, an ivy or an asagao morning glory, is also pictured. This type of kakejiku is called kacho in Japanese, meaning birds and flowers. This elegant piece is perfect for fall/early winter but can be displayed all year. This piece is signed with a name.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
