Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a landscape scenery in the mountains. There is a river or a lake at the foreground with a boat sailing. Some houses are also painted. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted in black and white, and has some dashes of yellow. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
