Vintage Japanese Wood Carving of Ainu Bear Candle Holder
Famously from Hokkaido and northern Japan, this intricately hand-carved bear is a traditional Ainu folk handicraft. It has a space on the belly to hold a candle or incense burner pot. There is also a slot at the front that could be used to hold incense sticks.
In Ainu spirituality, bears and other animals are considered vehicles for the divine. Bear sculptures in particular were also used to represent thanks to the animal for providing meat and furs long ago. These bears are popular souvenirs and gifts when traveling to Hokkaido and are commonly featured as a centerpieces in tokonoma alcoves in traditional tatami rooms.
