Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a portrait of a man with a fierce allure carrying swords. It is likely a portrait of Shoki, also known as Zhong Kui, a God who protects against evil beings. At the top, there is calligraphy. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
