Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) depicts Kannon, a Buddhist deity. Kannon is sitting at the top of a cliff. She is painted with a halo, and there are some flowers in a vase close to her. There is calligraphy on it. The piece is likely by Japanese monk and artist Otani Koen. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
