Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a plum tree in blossom with a black, white, and orange bird sitting on one branch. There is also some green bamboo foliage on the left. This bird is called kibitaki in Japanese, a narcissus flycatcher. This piece is signed and has a red seal. The scroll is stored in a wooden box with a sticker on one side.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
