Vtg Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This is a vintage hand-painted shikishi art board. This art board represents a man carrying a bell on his back. The man is about to cross a bridge and a mountain can be seen in the background. The scenery is painted with black ink and has some colored accents. This item is a unique display piece that can find a place in any home or office decor.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
