Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This Japanese shikishi art board is a printed reproduction featuring a family of chickens. There is one rooster, one hen, and three chicks. Rooster is one of the 12 zodiac animals, but this type of painting is also a symbol for peace and stability in one's family.  This shikishi is signed with a name and a red seal, and it is stored in a plastic sleeve. There is a paper with explanations in Japanese on the back.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
