Antique Japanese Ukiyoe Woodblock Print
This is a Japanese woodblock print Ukiyoe by Yoshikazu Utagawa. The title of the kanji characters say 100 Cherry Blossoms(千本桜) . In ukiyo-e prints, a "nirami" is depicted in the center. The famous "nirami" in Kabuki is a type of dramatic pose known as "mie," which is passed down exclusively within the Ichikawa Danjuro family, who inherit the role of Naritaya in Kabuki. During the Edo period, it was believed to have the power to ward off evil and ensure good health. Nirami is characterized by a unique expression where one eye is squinted while the other eye gazes straight ahead. Ukiyoe is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
