Vintage Japanese Lacquered Wooden Serving Tray, Obon 

This is a vintage lacquered wood serving tray, or obon. It is perfectly square with sides. This black and red lacquerware is called Akebono-nuri and has two coatings: the inner one is red and the outer one is black.  Akebono-nuri is named after dawn; this lacquerware's red color looks like the first light of dawn shining through darkness.
Obon (serving trays) are typically used for serving drinks and snacks to guests in one's home, business, etc. They provide both function and beautiful decor.
