Vintage Japanese Ceramic Suiban for Ikebana Flower Arrangement
This is a vintage small ceramic Japanese flower vase, or suiban. It is a simple round shape with raised sides and bamboo leaf cutouts on the sides for airflow. On the front side are two plum blossoms (orange and blue), and on the inside is a simple branch of plum blossom buds. It has textured ridges in a band around the outside to give it a distinct wooden bucket look.
Suiban means "water tray" and typically houses the spiked weight (kenzan) that hold ikebana flower stems in place, but can also be used as a base for a flower pot, or even a potted bonsai.
