Vintage Japanese Chiyogami Paper Drink Saucers

This is a five-piece set of vintage Japanese chiyogami paper drink saucers/coasters, or chataku. They are flat  with a variety of traditional patterns and motifs such as: plum blossoms (ume), peonies (botan), hagi plants, bellflowers (kikyo), bamboo (take), chrysanthemums (kiku), and pine trees (matsu). The base is wood with the paper around it.
Strong, durable, and with gorgeous designs mirroring styles found on kimono fabric, chiyogami paper is commonly found in textile art such as paper dolls and for decorating tins and boxes. As it became more widespread and popular, it is also used for origami, accessories, book covers, and more.
