Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in a classic rounded shape. It is white with red and orange accents. On one side are stamped images of a paulownia flower and chrysanthemum, both important symbols of Japan. The other side has kanji writing that says "Koudaiji Temple". There is a twine string tied at the top via a loop.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
