Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This dorei is in the shape of a traditional Noh theatre character called okina. This particular character is the oldest of all the human characters portrayed in Noh, and it is said that okina brings longevity and prosperity to families. It is mostly gray with green, gold, and purple accents. There is a small white clay ball inside as well as a red string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
