Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This dorei has a classic bell shape, but on either side is the male and female attire worn during the Awa Odori, a famous summer festival dance in Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. Perhaps the most iconic piece is the narrow straw hat worn by female dancers specifically along with a bold-colored yukata. The male dress is a happi (small jacket) with tabi. There is a small white clay ball inside as well as a red and white string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
