Japanese Bronze Incense Burner, Koro
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist bronze metal incense burner (koro) commonly used in Buddhist altars. It is a wide-mouthed pot with decorative side pieces and a loose-fitting lid. There is an engraved gold crane on the front side. The golden crane is the Nichiren Shoshu sect mon symbol. It is used for burning incense powder or sticks. Burning incense is a means of purifying the body of the worshiper.
