Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a pair of vintage Japanese bronze metal flower vases, or hanatate, for Buddhist altars. This particular pair has a lot of gorgeous detail, such as raised images of birds on both sides of each, a floral petal-like foot design, and small decorative handles.
It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The offering of Sakaki tree leaves signifies that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul.
