This is a combination wood and bamboo flower vase, hanatate, for Buddhist altars. This particular vase has a cylindrical shape (bamboo) with a round base (wood), and it is painted gold.
It is common to offer a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of a Buddhist altar. It is also a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves in Shinto. The meaning of offering sakaki tree leaves is that the gods living in the sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul.
