Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the back is white with a floral pattern, while the front is pink and gold with a floral pattern. This tablecloth is rectangular and has a purple tassel on each corner. It sits on top of the kyozukue surface.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
