Vintage Japanese Wooden Decorative Plaque

This vintage Japanese wooden souvenir plaque features illustrations of the castle town Hagi in Yamaguchi. On the back, it has calligraphy and a Japanese poem Tanka by Shoin Yoshida, a Samurai in the late Edo era. This plaque has a bell and a red and white braided cord.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
