Vintage Japanese Wooden Shrine Plaque, Ema

This vintage Japanese ema plaque features a picture of a samurai sitting. This plaque comes from the Takeda shrine, so possibly the pictured man is Takeda Shingen. He is wearing a blue kimono and is holding a paper fan. The plaque has inscriptions on the right and a red seal with the name of the shrine on the left. It has an orange braided cord.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
