Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and a dark brown color, this small sturdy wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits flush with the rest of the box for a uniform look. Inside are two adjustable carved brackets meant to secure a scroll in place.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
