Vintage Japanese Wooden Shrine Plaque, Ema

This vintage Japanese ema plaque has a picture of a decorated festival horse surrounded by festival men wearing happi, a type of clothing worn during festivals. It also has a red seal on the front and a wood-burned engraved seal on the back. It has a purple braided cord.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto, and sometimes Buddhist shrines, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
