Vtg Japanese Boys' Day Horse Figure w/Box
This is a vintage Japanese gogatsu-ningyo white horse figure used for display during the boys' festival in May. This doll uses a combination of chirimen fabric (textured silk) and other colorful fabrics, plastic resin, and paper mache (hariko). It is fastened via metal wire to a wooden bottom base. There was once a framed glass cover over the top, but it is missing. It comes with the original box. Horses symbolize "wealth" and "prosperity" because they lead battles to victory on the battlefield and give people a good harvest in agriculture.
Gogatsu-Ningyo (May dolls) are amulets wishing for the health and growth of children that are displayed during the Boys' Festival. Other items such as armor decorations, helmet decorations, and warrior dolls (warlords) are also popular.
