Japanese Shikishi Art Reproduction

This is a Japanese shikishi art board. It is a printed reproduction of the painting Shunsho (Spring Evening) by Shoen Uemura. It represents two women wearing kimonos and gorgeous hair accessories. One woman is whispering into the other one's ear. Some small petals of cherry blossoms carried by the wind can be seen on the left. This printed reproduction has a tag on the back and a washi paper dedicated cover.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
