Vintage Japanese Daruma Statue
This is a vintage Japanese daruma made of papier-mâché (hariko). It is a traditional Japanese lucky charm and toy that imitates the figure of Daruma Daishi sitting in meditation. Daruma dolls are sold without eyes. The belief is to fill in one eye with a wish one wants granted, then fill in the other eye when the wish comes true. Overall it is a visual representation of perseverance, hard work, and luck. The bottom is weighted so it will not tip over. This daruma has not been used.
