Vintage Japanese Paper Uchiwa Fan w/Box

This is a Japanese paper fan or Uchiwa. Uchiwa is a traditional fan tool typically made of wood or bamboo and paper in a flat paddle-like shape. This particular fan is called "fukakusa", a unique style of fan characterized by its tall and narrow shape. It features a scene from Kyoto's famous Gion Festival (matsuri) of participants pulling along a grandly-decorated cart called "dashi". There are gold specks throughout for texture and shine. It comes with the original box and pamphlets detailing the Gion Festival as well as information about the makers of the fan (Komaruya) who have been crafting these beautiful fans since the Edo period.
