This is a traditional Japanese folding fan called sensu. You can use this when it's hot or as decoration. It is sometimes used in traditional Japanese dance. It is a gradient red to white paper with gold floral accents (chrysamthemum, balloon flower). The frame is natural bamboo lacquered black. The end pieces are fastened by white string.
This type of fan is called maisen and is traditionally used by maiko and geisha for dancing. Likewise, shimaisen are similar in structure and are used in Noh or other traditional theatrical performances.
