Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. It is in the shape of the head of a Lion or Shishi, which is believed to be a charm against evil spirits. The backside Kanji means warding off bad luck. The bell is brown, blue around the eyes, and red on the lip. The string is straw. It has a small brown clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
