Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the back is white with a chrysanthemum pattern, while the front is a soft beige with colorful mon symbols of various designs. This tablecloth is rectangular and has purple and gold tassels on the front two corners. It sits on top of the kyozukue surface.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
