Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll

Hand-crafted and in a brown color, this sturdy and slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid is step-top and fits flush on the top. There are two wooden fixed brackets to keep the scroll in place. There is a sticker on the front side.

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other establishments such as Japanese traditional inns ryokan, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
