Vtg. Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Tea Ceremony
Wooden boxes are a common method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc.
This vintage lidded rectangular box is originally made for a small tea ceremony set (chabako), but is perfect for storing trinkets or use for display or other crafts/projects. There are fixed shelves as well as a narrow drawer for cloths and wagashi papers, and a movable stand for a tea whisk and whisk stand. There is a metal handle fixed to the top and a hanging handle in the shape of a drawstring bag on the door. It can comfortably fit two tea bowls, a matcha container (natsume), a whisk, and whisk holder, and other small, flat accessories.
