Wooden boxes are a standard method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are widely used for many traditional Japanese crafts, including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc, and even food.
This antique lidded box, originally made to hold lacquerware trays, is made of lightweight wood and has been brushed with a dark brown color. The lid has some kanji. It is excellent for general storage, DIY, or decoration.
