Vintage Japanese Shinto Shrine Kamidana
This is a vintage Japanese Shinto home shrine, or kamidana. It is a miniature shrine that is placed in Japanese homes and is believed to house a fragment or connection point to kami, or god of a shrine of the owner's choosing or affiliation of a business. These shrines are always placed above eye level and away from doorways or anywhere someone may walk under. It is also unanimously understood that kamidana be placed as the highest shelf in a room. Inside, they typically house various items such as shrine charm (ofuda) and a small round mirror (shinkyou) which acts as an item to attract the kami associated with the shrine.
This particular vintage shrine is made of wood with gold resin decorations on the edge of the roof and on the door.. The door panel can open and is removable for easy access to the inside. It has a flat back so it can be easily installed against a wall.
