Japanese Wooden Wall Hanging Frame Tanzaku-kake

This is a vintage Japanese wooden wall hanging frame, Tanzaku-kake, with a Tanzaku. A Tanzaku is a long and narrow Shikishi used for painting and writing Japanese poems such as Haiku or Tanka. The Tanzaku is accented with gold and silver sprinkles and a foggy gold color.  A Japanese poem, Haiku, is written on the Tanzaku and the poem is by the famous Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa. Brown floral fabrics are used to fix the Tanzaku.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
