Antique Japanese Wood Lacquered Base Neck Pillow
This is an antique Japanese neck rest or pillow called takamakura. This neck rest consists of an angular, carved base made of brown lacquered wood. The pillow is made of red silk fabric. The pillow is likely stuffed with dried rice hulls/husks, as it was a common stuffing material at the time.
A neck rest, or Takamakura, is a support stand for the neck designed to keep hair intact while sleeping or resting and was used by the Japanese traditional female entertainers, the Geisha, to preserve their outstanding hair.
