Vintage Japanese Lacquered Bamboo Ikkanbari Bowl
This is a Japanese hexagonal bowl made of woven bamboo and paper. It is a deep red color with black kanji characters throughout. One end is an orange color.
Ikkanbari is a traditional crafts that marries woven bamboo baskets, washi paper, and lacquer. Like paper mache, paper is adhered in layers over a basket and is coated with lacquer or kakishibu (water-resistant stain made of fermented persimmon juice).
This was purchased at the famous Osu Antique Market in Nagoya
