Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features pine, bamboo, and plum; known as the Three Friends of Winter. The pine tree is in the background and the bamboo and the plum tree with blossoms are in the foreground. This kakejiku is painted with black ink with some red and green details. This piece was signed by Kaido in 1995.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
