Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features 88 boxes to place 88 red seals (goshuin) from the temples and places of the Shikoku Hachijuhakkasho or Shikoku Pilgrimage. This kakejiku has some boxes filled with temple seals. 

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
