Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents a monochrome mountain scenery. Big mountains can be seen in the background and a wooden bridge leading to old houses can be seen in the foreground. The human being crossing the bridge gives the scale. This piece is signed by an artist Kozan and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
