Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features calligraphy of a tanka poem by Japanese poet Bokusui Wakayama (1885-1928). It is a poem that expresses nostalgia for things that once flourished but have now disappeared. This piece is signed with the name of the poet.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
