Vintage Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, or dorei. This bell features a plum blossom design and a Japanese poem, Tanka. The plum blossoms have red and white petals with a yellow center. The plum branches are painted in layered brown and soft metallic silver, giving them a subtle sheen and gentle depth. It has a small clay ball inside, a braided red string, and a paper tag.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
