Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of the famous lucky/magic hammer (uchide no kozuchi) wielded by one of the Seven Lucky Gods, Daikokuten. It is said that the hammer can cause anything one desires to appear. It is mostly brown with various colorful painted decorations. There is a small orange tassel at the top end attached via a loop.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
