Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This bell is a shaped woman wearing a hat. The bell says Saigoku Pilgrimage No. 10, Mimuroto Temple. The Saigoku Pilgrimage is Japan's oldest pilgrimage and involves visiting 33 temples and "Fudasho" in five prefectures, including Nara, Kyoto, Hyogo, Wakayama, and Gifu, to pray for Kannon. Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
