Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejoku). It is very simple in design and has elegantly curved legs with a glossy black lacquer as a base and gold on the front side legs. It contains a matching, removable top panel.
In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
